Laboratory Kempink Tester
The reference standard for PDI measurement
Trusted by feed manufacturers and wood pellet producers across Europe. Accurate, reproducible PDI measurement for batch validation, quality certification, and production calibration. Correlated to ASAE/ASABE S269.5 for animal feed and ISO 17831-1:2025 for wood pellets.

Batch validation & traceability
Measurement designed to eliminate the human factor.
The Laboratory Kempink Tester measures Pellet Durability Index (PDI) under controlled, standardized conditions. Three technical principles deliver identical test conditions regardless of operator, shift, or site: automatic start after sample loading, PLC-controlled drum speed maintained by a frequency controller, and automatic fines sieving during the test cycle. An enlarged wear rate display makes it easier to identify incremental quality improvements.
The Kempink method was designed around one principle: quality results should be independent of who is doing the testing.
Results are correlated to ASAE/ASABE S269.5 for animal feed and to ISO 17831-1:2025 for wood pellets and biomass, the two recognized international standards for mechanical pellet durability testing. Kempink results can be directly compared across production sites, operators, and audit cycles.

The right starting point for quality-driven producers.
The Laboratory Kempink Tester is the right instrument for any pellet producer for whom PDI measurement is a quality management requirement, whether driven by GMP+, GAFTA, ENplus certification, or internal production standards.
Three primary use cases:
Compliance documentation
Producers who need traceable, reproducible PDI results for regulatory or customer audits. Kempink results are standardized, comparable across sites, and correlated to the recognized industry norms.
Baseline and calibration
Producers establishing their PDI baseline, whether to understand current production quality or to build the reference data needed before evaluating continuous inline measurement.
Reference for Inline Tester users
Operations already using WEMO Inline measurement systems on the production line, who need a validated laboratory reference for periodic calibration verification and quality system documentation.
When your quality requirementsgrow beyond the lab
The Laboratory Kempink Tester gives you accurate, audit-ready PDI data for batch validation. For producers whose quality requirements extend to real-time production control, detecting deviations during the batch rather than hours after it, WEMO’s Inline products bring the same Kempink methodology directly onto the production line.
The measurement principles are identical. The step to Inline is a step in scope, not a step into unfamiliar territory. And because WEMO’s Inline products are delivered as Quality-as-a-Service, no capital investment is required to make that step.

PDI documentation generated by the Laboratory Kempink Tester supports compliance with the following standards and certification frameworks:
View the Compliancy Matrix
| Framework | Application |
|---|---|
| ASAE/ASABE S269.5 | The recognised pellet durability standard for animal feed. Results from the Laboratory Kempink Tester are directly correlated to this standard. |
| ISO 17831-1:2025 | The recognised mechanical durability standard for wood pellets and biomass (current edition, published March 2025; supersedes ISO 17831-1:2015). Results from the Laboratory Kempink Tester are correlated to this standard. |
| GMP+ B1 | Supports quality documentation requirements for GMP+-certified feed production environments. Note: GMP+ certifies production operations, not individual instruments. |
| GAFTA | Supports quality documentation for internationally traded feed ingredients under GAFTA trading rules. Relevant for animal feed sector only. |
| ENplus A1 | ENplus A1 requires a minimum mechanical durability of 98.0% (DU 98.0). The Laboratory Kempink Tester, correlated to ISO 17831-1:2025, provides the measurement basis for ENplus compliance documentation. Relevant for wood pellet sector only. |
